Traditional vs non-surgical blepharoplasty

What is a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a medical procedure that fixes saggy eyelids and may include eliminating excess skin, muscle, and fat. As you age, your eyelids stretch, and muscle loss occurs. This can result in overabundant fat that can build up above and underneath your eyelids, causing hanging eyebrows, sagging upper lids and bags under your eyes.

The sagging skin and fat accumulation can make you look older. Drooping skin that occurs around your eyes can reduce your side vision or peripheral vision. It is often in the upper and external parts of your field of vision. Blepharoplasty can lessen or remove these vision issues and create a more youthful, confident look.

Who is suitable?

A candidate for blepharoplasty will have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Sagging, excess skin in the upper and/or lower eyelids, often this includes excess fat
  • Upper eyelid hooding that can partially block vision
  • Bags below the eyes, often caused by pockets of fat
  • The position of your eyebrows may have changed over time causing an overhang of the upper eyelids

What is a non-surgical blepharoplasty?

Our foreheads support our upper face. As we age, the skin around our temples loses its underlying support structure due to the loss of proteins and tissues, such as collagen, in our skin. This can make our eyebrows sink, making our eyelids look hooded. By lifting the forehead, we can 'open up' our eyes and reduce hooded eyes.

Ultherapy utilises a remarkable ultrasound technology to stimulate and regrow collagen and elastin within a deep targeted area. Collagen and elastin will lift the hooded eyelids to give the eyebrow a tighter look helping to lift the eyelids.

The Ultherapy brow lift attempts to lift the brow area, utilising modern and non-invasive ultrasound technology. This Ultherapy technique helps to lift and fix sagging skin on the temple and upper brow. This carefully raises the top eyelid into the right spot while keeping it looking natural and minimal. What happens in a blepharoplasty operation?

Before the procedure:

  • Blepharoplasty is typically performed as a day case procedure. Your doctor will inject anaesthetic into your eyelids and, to help you relax, deliver intravenous medication.

During the procedure:

  • The plastic surgeon will make a cut along the upper eyelid fold, remove some superfluous skin, muscle, and maybe fat, and seal the wound.
  • The surgeon will make a cut slightly below the lashes in the natural crease or inside the lower lid. They will close the wound after removing or redistributing extra fat, muscle, and drooping skin.
  • If your upper eyelid droops too close to your eye, your surgeon may perform blepharoplasty with ptosis, a technique that adds support to the eyebrow muscle.

Results:

  • Patients are pleased with their blepharoplasty outcome, which includes a more relaxed and rejuvenated appearance as well as increased self-confidence. The results of surgery can endure a lifetime for some people. Some may experience a recurrence of droopy eyelids.
  • Bruising and swelling usually go away in 10 to 14 days, at which point you should feel comfortable going out in public again. The surgical cuts may leave scars that take time to disappear. However, the upper eyelid scar is hidden in the fold or crease of the upper eyelid. The lower eye bag removal scar is hidden in the inside of the lower eyelid, which means scarring is virtually invisible. Your plastic surgeon will discuss post-operative aftercare before your procedure.
